What the?
This sort of thing is a bit outmoded with all the social networking sites that
have popped up. Now it seems as if you can't escape hearing about the trivial
interests of other people—all the time. That's unfortunate. Facebook,
MySpace, and all the rest have in many ways transformed the personal into the
impersonal. In some bleak, unlikely future, after mankind has squandered all its energy
resources, I suspect that the social web will fall among the least of the things
missed.
Sanskrit
It's been years since I last hit the books on Sanskrit. I even switched to Mandarin
for a brief period, but I have enough trouble staying on top of English.
Tai Chi
I'm learning a Yang-style taijiquan. If you're in
the Bay Area, you should give it a shot at the
Taijiquan Tutelage of Palo Alto.
Playing Music
Times have changed, and playing music has taken a back seat to other modes of
expression. We can't be everything all the time.
Listening to Music
Ahh, finally something that I have time for these days.
Since I'm often asked, here's a list of a few artists that I enjoy--right
now: Diamanda Galas (Guilty, Guilty, Guilty), Skinny Puppy,
CocoRosie, John Lennon, Antony & the Johnsons, Fields of the Nephilim,
Bob Dylan (up to Blonde on Blonde),
Peter Brötzmann (and Last Exit), Bauhaus, and Phil Ochs.
Reading Books
My reading patterns and focus have changed dramatically over the last few
years. Although I'm still pleased with Albert Camus, my attention has shifted
from absurdist fiction, through Haruki Murakami, to the lost generation. I
wonder why.
Philosophy of Science
a
Doesn't everyone read this stuff? I guess not. My life centers on the
processes of discovery and creativity, and sometimes philosophers say
interesting things.
Having Fun
Do you like fun? I sure do. In my book, nothin' beats it.
