Machine Learning technology has proven itself in many situations, but experts from the field were typically in the driver's seat, guiding the knowledge discovery process and the learning algorithms. Recently, more companies are interested in embedding the technology into broader vertical solutions. Data mining technology has reached Moore's chasm stage, where the technology that was adopted by the Innovators and Early Adopters is now ripe for the Early Majority. Or is it?
There are significant challenges that companies face when they attempt to integrate data mining technologies into solutions. I will describe some of these challenges and the decisions we made at Blue Martini. Problems include build versus buy, integration with OLTP systems and other legacy systems, closing the loop back to those systems, and aggregating transactional data to form signatures.
