Difficult optimization problems arise in all fields of science,
engineering, and industry; exact solution methods are often lacking,
heuristic methods of all sorts abound. Recently, a group of
researchers has begun to add yet another such meta-method to the mix.
Optimization involves a search for good solutions. During the course
of a search one visits several feasible/infeasible/partial/complete
solutions. Perhaps something can be learnt from them, to be
profitably applied to discovering a better solution, or perhaps
towards solving a related problem. In this talk I will present an
overview of the recent works of several groups on applying machine
learning methods to optimization problems. I will also discuss my own
work in this area.
