The INFORMS Journal on Computing (JoC) http://joc.pubs.informs.org/ solicits high-quality original papers describing novel data mining methods and applications that have a potential impact on the WWW. The Editors are particularly interested in methods that span the boundaries of traditional disciplines of Computer Science, OR/Management Science, and Statistics, and applications that span the functional areas of Information Systems, Marketing, and Operations Management. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to): * Techniques for collecting and organizing Web-based data. * Algorithms and techniques for analyzing this data. * Development of theoretical principles to reflect what can be gleaned from Web site visitors (customers, suppliers, employees, etc.), based on "touch-point" data (clickstream, registration, purchasing, etc.), combined with third-party and off-line data, both at the individual and the segment level. * Electronic Relationship Management (including Customer Relationship Management and Personalization) issues particular to the Web environment. * Privacy, security and trust issues. * Architectures and techniques for WWW Data Mining. * eBusiness applications (marketing, merchandizing, supply chain management, etc.) that may benefit from Web-based mining. Papers will be published in the JoC in a special cluster on this topic in the area of Knowledge and Data Mining. The Journal of Computing is a publication of the Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences (INFORMS), and has a focus on the interface between operations research, management science and computer science. Examples of such large data sets in the scientific domain are genomic data (Biology), climate data (Earth Sciences), sky survey data (Astronomy), and computational simulations that run on high performance computers. In the commercial domain, the use of bar codes in commercial outlets, the computerization of business transactions, and the explosion of e-businesses are also providing a flood of data. We have an unprecedented opportunity to analyze this data and extract intelligent and useful information. The field of data mining draws upon extensive work in areas such as statistics, machine learning, pattern recognition, databases, and high performance computing to discover interesting and previously unknown information in data sets. This conference will provide a forum for the presentation of recent results in data mining, including applications, algorithms, software, and systems. The conference will feature peer reviewed, contributed papers as well as invited talks, tutorials and workshops. Proceedings of the conference will be available on CD-ROM as well as online. CONFERENCE RELATED WORKSHOPS: ----------------------------- Several workshops will be held on Saturday, April 7 on topics of current interest. This is marvelous sign of increased interest in IR. Still, we in IR of course want to attract the best IR papers to the SIGIR meeting, particularly from researchers and practitioners in other fields. SIGIR 2001 is making a special effort to attract such papers by establishing a "mentoring" or "pre-review" option. Authors who want to submit a paper to SIGIR 2001, and have not presented a full-length paper at a past SIGIR meeting, have the option of being matched up with an experienced SIGIR reviewer. The volunteer "mentor" will offer comments on a draft paper or description of the work in advance of the SIGIR deadline (and of course will not be one of the official reviewers for the final submitted paper, if any). This mentoring option is inspired by the success of a similar option at the ACM SIGCHI conference. If you are interested in this option, please write the Mentoring Chair, Dave Lewis (ddlewis2@att.net) by October 15. Please send an abstract or brief description of your area of work (or draft paper if you have it), to allow matching with an appropriate mentor. Further information on SIGIR 2001 (Sept. 17-19, 2001 in New Orleans, LA, USA) can be found at: http://www.csc.lsu.edu/~drobins/sighome.html Regards, Dave ======================================== From: Andrea Danyluk Subject: Announcing ICML-2001, Call For Papers Date: Thu, 14 Sep 2000 23:53:39 -0400 ICML-2001 Williams College Williamstown, MA June 28 - July 1, 2001 The Eighteenth International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML-2001) will be held at Williams College, in the scenic Berkshires of western Massachusetts, from June 28 to July 1, 2001. Date: Tue, 19 Sep 2000 07:23:35 -0700 Since our original posting in August, we filled one of our advertised positions, but another one became open. So we now have (as of September 18, 2000)... 2 IMMEDIATE OPENINGS (1 Research Programmer, 1 Systems Programmer) Genetic Programming Inc. is a small privately funded corporation using a beowulf cluster computer system consisting of 1,000 Pentium processors to do research in applying genetic programming to produce human-competitive results. Our group publishes and presents numerous research papers each year in various scientific conferences and journals. We are seeking 2 full-time programmers (1 Research Programmer and 1 Systems Programmer) who are proficient in Java or C. The RESEARCH PROGRAMMER position calls for at least a B.S. degree and at least two years experience in Java or C doing academic or corporate research programming. The successful candidate is expected to have expertise in some specific science or engineering domain with the aim of applying genetic programming to that domain. The possibilities are very open-ended and include, but are not limited to, analog circuit design, control, finite element analysis, shape optimization, operations research, mechanical design, signal processing, civil engineering, applied mathematics, chemical engineering, bioinformatics, computational biology, genomics, protein structure prediction, econometrics, etc. This position requires the ability to discuss and contribute ideas on how to approach new problems, suggest new problem areas to address, quickly learn about new problem domains, and to then write and run the necessary programs. The SYSTEMS PROGRAMMER position calls for at least a B.S. degree, two years experience as software developer in Java or C, and ability to maintain our software and our 1,000-Pentium system. Familiarity with linux, network programming, shell scripting, perl is a plus. The successful candidate will also be actively involved in our research programming. Experience with, or knowledge of, genetic programming, genetic algorithms, or evolutionary computation, machine learning, neural networks, artificial intelligence, artificial life, DNA computing, etc. is a plus, but not required. Please include all relevant information, date available, and several references. Since we desire to fill these positions immediately, the candidate must currently possess the legal ability to work in the United States. The significant time delays, uncertainty, and paperwork, involved in obtaining new visas for technical work in the US for persons outside the NAFTA area precludes starting that process at this time . Anonymous medical records or similar with structured and unstructured parts would be particularly interesting. I would be very interested to hear from people working on such data, public data sets or the like. Thank you in advance for your help. -- Graeme Stewart Hybrid Intelligent Systems Research Group The Informatics Centre SCET University of Sunderland St Peters Way Sunderland SR6 0DD United Kingdom Phone: +44 191 515 3641 Fax: +44 191 515 2781 Email: graeme.stewart@sunderland.ac.uk http://osiris.sunderland.ac.uk/~cs0grs/ http://www.his.sunderland.ac.uk ======================================== From: David E Rumelhart Prize Subject: THE RUMELHART PRIZE Announcement and Call for Nominations Date: Thu, 07 Sep 2000 15:26:14 -0400 ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR NOMINATIONS THE DAVID E.
